Women’s History Month is a time to reflect on the achievements of women across industries, communities, and generations. In behavioral health, women have played a vital role in advancing compassionate care, advocating for vulnerable populations, and shaping treatment environments where healing and dignity are prioritized.
Earlier in March, International Women’s Day offered a global moment to recognize these contributions. At Recovery at the Crossroads in Blackwood, the day also served as an opportunity to acknowledge the dedicated women whose leadership helps guide the organization’s mission of supporting recovery and improving lives.
Their work reflects the values that define effective behavioral healthcare. Compassion, resilience, collaboration, and advocacy are not just ideals, they are daily practices that help individuals and families move forward during some of life’s most difficult moments.
Leadership Rooted in Compassion and Experience
For Nadine Talley, MSW, LCSW, CTSS, Clinical Director at Recovery at the Crossroads, Women’s History Month highlights the perseverance and progress of women who have continued to lead despite barriers.
“International Women’s Day invites us to honor the achievements of women across the world. These accomplishments have been made despite generations of barriers that have limited opportunities for women to fully realize their potential.”
Talley’s own journey reflects the complexity and growth that often shape leadership in healthcare. “As an organizational leader, clinical practitioner, and, most importantly, a mother, my own path has been shaped by moments of triumph and disappointment, confidence and uncertainty, growth and vulnerability.”
These experiences influence the way care is delivered at Recovery at the Crossroads in Blackwood, New Jersey. The team at RAC focuses on meeting people where they are while recognizing the unique needs of each individual seeking support.
“At RAC, I am grateful to be part of an organization that not only values women in leadership but actively fosters an environment where healing, growth, and dignity are extended to every individual, regardless of gender, religion, race, or ethnicity.”
Talley emphasizes that individuals entering treatment deserve respect, understanding, and the belief that recovery is possible. “Our commitment is to improve lives by meeting people where they are and honoring the unique needs of those who find themselves at a crossroads. Women can feel confident that their voices, experiences, and challenges will be met with respect, understanding, and the unwavering belief that they deserve to thrive.”
Women Supporting Healing Behind the Scenes
While clinical leadership often receives the most attention, effective behavioral healthcare depends on strong collaboration across every department. At Recovery at the Crossroads, women contribute to that mission in many different ways.
Laurel A. Vnucak, MS, Human Resources Director, highlights the unique intersection of responsibilities within behavioral healthcare organizations.
“As a woman working in the behavioral healthcare industry, I’ve experienced firsthand how powerful it is to be part of a profession rooted in empathy, resilience, and advocacy.”

Her role places her at the center of multiple priorities within the organization. “Working in human resources in behavioral healthcare has placed me at the crossroads of business, science and humanity, supporting staff who in turn support clients through some of the most vulnerable moments in their lives.”
Vnucak also emphasizes the importance of workplace environments that encourage collaboration, respect, and professional growth. “That’s why I’m especially proud to be part of a company that actively supports and values women in the workplace. From encouraging professional growth and leadership development to fostering a culture of collaboration, respect, and flexibility, our organization recognizes that empowering women strengthens our teams and the communities we serve.”
In the finance department, Mindel Gordon plays another essential role in supporting the clinical mission.
“As a woman working in behavioral health, I value being part of an industry that makes a measurable impact. My role allows me to support the clinical mission through strong financial oversight, organization, and accountability.”
Gordon notes that a collaborative workplace culture allows women to grow professionally while supporting the larger goal of helping individuals achieve lasting recovery. “I’ve experienced steady support from leadership, meaningful opportunities to take initiative, and a collaborative culture grounded in professionalism and mutual respect.”
Recognizing Women’s Impact in Behavioral Health
Women’s History Month reminds us that progress in healthcare is often built through collective effort. Leaders, clinicians, administrators, and support staff all contribute to treatment environments where individuals feel safe, heard, and supported.
At Recovery at the Crossroads in Blackwood, women leaders continue to shape a culture that prioritizes dignity, compassion, and growth. Their work strengthens not only the organization but also the individuals and families who turn to behavioral health services during difficult times.
